Beatrix Potter – Access Campaigner

April 18, 2012

Let’s hear it for Beatrix Potter.

Without her some 14000 acres of the Lake District might have been wrecked – that is how much land she purchased to prevent development and gifted to the National Trust.

Imagine the Lakes if the speculative builders had got their way.

But what many people don’t realise is that she was a very keen campaigner for free access to the fells and fought – alongside Canon Rawnsley – for the preservation of footpaths and bridleways.

How different from the present lot of nouveau riche, many of whom move in to the countryside and immediately try to keep us peasants out.

A wonderful lady!

Well I never knew that!!! – thanks for informing me. Yes nowadays people are quite greedy about land even if they are not using it.
