Appleby Horse Fair
It is that time of the year when the Gypsies and travellers of Britain – and further afield – foregather at the Appleby Horse Fair, in Westmorland.
Yesterday, we walked into the town to see the arrivals, the colourful vardos, the racing carriages, horses being washed in the River Eden ready for sale.
The fair doesn’t open officially until today, but yesterday the town was already very busy, full of colour and excitement.
A little piece of old England, still not repressed by our dull and boring political Establishment.
We return to the fair today, so hope to get more pictures.
The fair is on until sunday, but come very early if you want to be able to park.
Appleby Horse Fair – Pobbleskey Welgorus if you want it in Romany.

I enjoyed reading this piece, John, – more………………….like that?
Hi John, it says on the website it runs until the 13th (Wed)? I’m thinking of maybe visiting Tue on the train – do you know if it’s still public entry then?
Sad to say the fair seems to be over.
i had a feeling that it was very much over after the weekend, certainly the pamphlet seems to suggest that. Perhaps that was last years on the web as there seems to be lot of 2011 stuff there.
Mind you it does say 13th on the website for this year, so I imagine something must still be going on.
Sad to report that it does all seem to be over. Went through Appleby this morning and they all seemed to be packing up nd going home.
Thanks John
