Filthy Britain

December 10, 2012

I have written on this subject before, but the litter in Britain seems to be getting even worse.

I receently walked up one path (about 300 yards) in Appleby-in-Westmorland. Loads of litter, including takeaway packets, drink cans etc. etc. plus offensive graffiti written on a wall.

Drive anywhere in Britain and look at the roadsides. Litter everywhere thrown out of vehicles.

Even on the highest mountains and remotest moorlands – which take some effort to reach – you will find litter.

Keep Britain Tidy used to go into schools. Have they stopped doing that? Someone needs to begin the education process again.

Not that I’m blaming young people en masse. Cars and lorries are driven by adults. Drive for long enough and you’ll see something go flying out of a car window.

Time to clean up Britain.

I appreciate our brain-cell dead politicians are trashing the British countryside, but that is no reason why other people should!

I’ve phoned companies before when I’ve been following a van where the driver or passenger has thrown litter out in front of me (I take that as a personal insult anyway – people throwing things at my car, especially lit cigarette ends – how do they know I haven’t got a petrol leak and won’t just explode into a fireball behind them?). For them to throw littler out of a car with their firm’s number on the back is particularly stupid but, luckily, because of the bad press it gives the firm, if you ring to complain, the idiots in question get a proper rollocking.

I think the police may take it fairly seriously if you get the number of people throwing litter out of cars (and poor animals in/out of bags to dump them when they’re fed up with them). They probably won’t be able to prosecute as it would be your word against theirs but they will probably go round and have a word, which should help.

But it makes me cringe when visitors to our country list it as just about the most littered and dirty they’ve ever visited 😦 Unfortunately, most of the litterers seem to either have no pride or are just plain braindead. I think it says a lot of the standard of litterers when you see a lot of the rubbish is take-away rubbish from junk-food places – says it all really.

Amen! It’s all part of the disconnect that characterizes our times. Keep inspiring folks to walk! The best way to get them thinking new thoughts!

Can’t do it with car drivers but I’ve been known to follow those who discard trays etc from takeaways home on foot and post the rubbish through their letterboxes. Littering is a LOT worse here in Ireland than in the UK
