Become a Ramblers Campaigner

December 30, 2012

Ways to get involved as a Ramblers Association Volunteer

Volunteering with us is a great way to give something back to walking and offers the opportunity to meet new, like-minded people, learn new skills and further your walking knowledge.

We have lots of different volunteering opportunities to cater for a wide range of walking interests.

Love getting outdoors?

You could

…become a walk leader

Our local walking groups lead hundreds of group walks for Ramblers members every week and contribute to our national walking festival programmes. It’s thanks to our walk leaders that we can offer over 38,000 walks across Britain every year.

We also coordinate health walks schemes in England and Wales and rely on a network of volunteers to provide health walks in local communities as part of our Walking for Health and Let’s Walk Cymru projects.

…become a route developer or route checker

You could contribute to our growing library of quality-checked Ramblers Routes designed to give independent walkers access to safe, easy-to-follow and inspiring walking routes across Britain to enjoy with family and friends.

Or you could help build a lasting legacy from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland by creating “Medal Routes” from walking hubs designed to encourage more people to enjoy the physical and social benefits of walking in their local area.

…join a path maintenance team

We have over 30 path maintenance teams – or Path Guardians as they are known – who repair and replace stiles, steps and signposts and physically clear obstacles and overgrown foliage that can easily choke footpaths if left untended.

Passionate about walkers’ rights?

You could

…become a Mystery Walker

Mystery Walkers carry out light touch surveys in England and Wales to help us create a map of where the best and the worst places to walk are. If you’re keen to get involved please use our Mystery Walker registration form.

…look after your local paths

Ramblers footpath secretaries work with other volunteers in their local area and liaise with local authorities to sort out footpath problems and inspect changes to the footpath network such as checking path diversions, path closures. They also help claim new paths for walkers.

…become a local campaigner

As well as supporting our national campaigns, you can also lobby locally to help protect and expand the place where people walk. If you have a local campaign you’d like support with please email us at walking.environment@ramblers.org.uk.

Want to be more involved in the running of the charity?

You could

…help to run a local group

Our local groups are run entirely by volunteers. Each group has an annually-elected committee with a chair, secretary, treasurer and membership secretary but there are also other ways to help out such as running local websites or coordinating walks programmes.

…coordinate our local groups

Our groups cooperate together as ‘Areas’. Area volunteers help support and coordinate the work of the groups, for example they help identify what funds groups need and encourage groups to try out new things. Area volunteers are delegates from within Ramblers groups.

…and even become a trustee

Areas elect delegates to attend our annual gathering – known as General Council – which in turn elects the Board of Trustees who run the organisation on behalf of our members. The Board of Trustees are all volunteers.
