Retirement Age Increase will Damage the Rambling Movement

Plans by the ConDem government to raise the state retirement age to 68 and beyond could irreparably damage the rambling movement.

The vast majority of local volunteers in organisations such as the Ramblers are pensioners; leading walks, inspecting and clearing paths, working on committees. Should pensioners have to work full time until they drop, much of this volunteer labour will ebb away, not just in the rambling movement, but in the very many voluntary organisations supported by pensioner volunteers.

Raising the state pension age is another short-sighted  and ill thought out measure by the present government. Its consequences will damage the society we live in. And where are the jobs anyway?

It must not happen.

David Cameron says we all have to work longer. The fact is that he and most MPs could afford to retire tomorrow. We are definitely not all in it together.

You can help by writing to your Member of Parliament (House of Commons, London SW1A OAA) and, if you are a pensioner, joining the National Pensioners Convention (see their excellent website).

You’re right about ‘work till we drop’ – that’s exactly what will happen – and I’m sure that’s exactly what they want so that we can’t claim the pension we’ve paid into all these years! 😦
