The British Countryside R.I.P.

January 23, 2013

I feel sorry for the next generation of country walkers/hillwalkers.

Is there going to be any countryside left after the building spivs get their hands on it?

Once upon a time you could stand on Scottish hills and see very much what the Victorian stravaigers and trampers used to see. Now modern intrusions are nearly everywhere.

The poor old Chiltern Hills are going to get the awful HS2 high speed train gizmo, so that the very rich can get to Birmingham half an hour quicker. (The rest of us can’t afford train tickets on more useful local lines).

George Osborne reckons it might be a good idea to tear toll roads across our pastoral countryside.

Why not just turn the bloody country into a vast multi-storey car park and have done with it?

And when did our national conservation groups become such wimps in fighting all of this?

There was a time they would have charged into battle. Sadly, no longer.
