Save the Agricultural Wages Board

April 11, 2013

On Tuesday the House of Commons will debate the abolition of the Agricultural Wages Board, which ensures that farm labourers get a fair wage, looks after their safety conditions and protects their rights to occupy tied cottages.

Needless to say, the ConDems want to do away with all. So do most of the big supermarket chains and, not surprisingly, Prince Charles and his Duchy of Cornwall.

Abolition will cause a blight on rural life. Lowered wages will mean there is less money to spend in village shops and pubs, probably leading to their closure.

Farmworkers will face the possibility of eviction from their cottages. Many will probably be sold off as second homes and holiday cottages, leading to the further death of rural communities.

The health and safety of farmworkers, one of the most dangerous of professions, will be reduced.

Please email your MP via the House of Commons website to stop this happening.
