Badgers Policy Bonkers

April 28, 2013

At a time when pensioners are freezing to death, the government is still planning to spend millions of pounds killing badgers.

30 years ago I was appointed press officer of the Dartmoor Badgers Protection League.

I was appalled at the bad science behind the badger slaughter.

Ministry of Agriculture scientists actually decided to blame badgers for the spread of TB long before they had ever found a badger with the disease. The thought that easier than blaming poor farming methods.

They admitted to me that they had no evidence that badgers could spread the disease under field conditions.

They still can’t!

MAFF scientists deliberately infected some badgers with massive doses of Bovine TB.

They then locked the badgers in a very small pen indoors with a number of cows.

Even under these stressful conditions it was several months before the first cow caught the disease.

Despite the thirty years of badger slaughter since, Bovine TB figures in cattle have actually increased, showing what a load of nonsense the policy is.

Bovine TB  – as the name Bovine suggests – is a disease of cattle, spread cow to cow.

The Bovine TB test for cattle is next to useless, throwing up any number of false positives and negatives.

Until that problem is resolved, cows will continue to get Bovine TB.

If you want to read more about the bad science behind this policy, seek our Richard Meyer’s book The Fate of the Badger.

Totally agree & well said. This upcoming badger cull is a travesty and should not be allowed to happen. As you say, the badger is simply a scapegoat for intensive farming methods and government failure.

Your facts and figures there are pretty useful – I do a lot of animal campaigning and certainly didn’t know about those early experiments. What I do know however is that, just the same as in humans, the answer is purely and simply… vaccination! I just wish they’d get their head around that fact and start a sensible vaccination programme!
