Bluebells at Muncaster

May 25, 2013

One of the joys of the English country year is the first show of bluebells under the fresh green leaves of the Springtime trees.Muncaster Castle 025

Yesterday we were at Muncaster Castle in Cumbria, enjoying a walk through its splendid bluebell wood. If you are in the vicinity I commend it to you.

I’m starting to think bluebells are the hardest British flower to photograph. I’ve taken hundreds of bluebell photos but there are few I’m happy with – getting the colour right is one of the hardest but you’ve done the right thing in taking them out of full sun – that just washes the colour right out and makes them look pinky-purple!

We have a beautiful (and very popular) bluebell wood near us which everyone visits – I’ve had a few visits the last couple of weeks. They’re very, very late this year though!
