Heron Happy Hour at Muncaster Castle

May 25, 2013

At Muncaster Castle in Cumbria yesterday we witnessed Heron Happy Hour which takes place at 4pm every day, when the herons from the local heronries come in to be fed.Muncaster Castle 055

Now, I’ve seen a few herons in my time, but never Muncaster Castle 082Muncaster Castle 063twenty-three in one go.

Several were sitting on the bank below the castle waiting for food in advance of the start of “Happy Hour”. Do they wear watches?

By the time the food had arrived many more arrived. Then the gentleman doing the feeding gave a great summoning shout and more herons flapped in from the nearby river.

In a few seconds  the fish were devoured and the herons flew away until the next day.

One of the more extraordinary sights to be witnessed.Muncaster Castle 068

Now that would definitely be something to see! Didn’t know about that – might give it a try next time I’m at Broughton-in-Furness and it’s bad weather…
