Appleby-in-Westmorland Gypsy Horse Fair 2013

June 3, 2013

Driving over to Bishop Auckland today we passed a number of vardos waiting to move into Appleby for the horse fair which begins on thursday.

If you are coming to Appleby then Friday and Saturday are the best days. If you are driving arrive early to make sure of a parking place, or use the Settle to Carlisle railway line or buses.

The two main areas of the fair are The Sands in Appleby (by the bridge) where the horses are washed in the River Eden and where some horse dealing takes place, and the vicinity around Fair Hill, where there are stalls, a great many parked vardos (horse drawn travelling wagons), and the Flashing Lane where the horses are tested at great speed.

Do remember to take care, particularly in the Flashing Lane, as being run over by a horse isn’t pleasant. Don’t get distracted if you are taking photos.

Have a great time at the fair!

Some great photos of the gypsy horses – and some that don’t look very like gypsy horses – they must be diversifying! I’m going to have to watch out I don’t start trying to buy some on Saturday!

I’m thinking of getting the train in from Langwathby as I’m probably coming from ‘back o’ Skidda’ area – do you think the station will be completely parked up if everyone has the same idea? I’ve no intention of bringing my car into Appleby on Saturday…

Don’t really know but I think if you are going to park anywhere for miles around you need to get there early
