Grandpa right: grandson wrong!

The government is doing something rather good!  

It has included in its draft Deregulation Bill the recommendations of the stakeholder working group on unrecorded highways, Stepping Forward.  The group aimed to make it quicker and easier for surveying authorities (county and unitary councils) to update their definitive maps of public paths, and this is crucial if we are to have any hope of getting those maps up to date before the cruel cut-off is implemented on 1 January 2026.  This will prevent further claims of public highways based on historic evidence (see previous blog).

The stakeholder working group was made up of representatives of landowners and farmers, local authorities and path-users.  It met between October 2008 and January 2010 and reached unanimous agreement.  It is because the consensus has such a broad base that the government is willing to proceed with the group’s recommendations.
