Help the Isle of Wight gain a coastal path

January 21, 2014

This is from the Isle of Wight Ramblers. Please give them your support!

Please help the Isle of Wight!

I’ve walked on the Isle of Wight for many years. My favourite thing about walking on the island is being by the sea.

Like you, I’ve called for a coastal path around the whole of England. I was delighted when we saved the project in the summer. But it gave me mixed emotions, because while mainland England is one step closer to a complete coastal path, the Isle of Wight has been left out of the project altogether.

That’s right. England’s biggest island, known for its walking, is actually excluded from the plans1.

I don’t think this is right, so I’ve worked with local Ramblers to get the support of the Chamber of Commerce, the Island Council and our MP. We’ve shown that a proper coastal path close to the sea and avoiding dangerous roads would be of great benefit to walkers and a vital boost to our local economy.

Together, we have persuaded the Government to look at the detail and ask whether our island should have the same rights to a coast path as the rest of the country.

We’ve got less than a week before the consultation closes. Can you help me John?

Please show your support for a path on the Island by adding your voice TODAY.

Thank you.

Mike Slater,

Isle of Wight Ramblers

PS – The more support we can show, the more likely that Government will give the Isle of Wight the coast path it deserves. You can help by visiting www.ramblers.org.uk/iowhaveyoursay

1 The England Coast Path only covers mainland England and islands that you can walk to at low tide.

Although this email has been written by Mike from Isle of Wight Ramblers, it has been sent out from the Ramblers centrally. We wouldn’t give your details out to others without your permission.

Surely, the IoW has a coastal footpath? I’m sure I’ve walked it!

I think they mean in the sense of the Coast and Maritime Act which will give a broad access sweep around the coast as opposed to a single path. Cheers John.
