Access Restrictions at New Waste on Dartmoor

June 29, 2014

Hello Everyone

Some of you may already know that the new landowner of Blachford Estate has terminated the agreement for Permissive Access at New Waste Cornwood.

I’ve started the petition “Keep Dartmoor Accessible, Allow Permissive Access at New Waste, Cornwood ” and need your help to get it off the ground.

Will you take 30 seconds to sign it right now? Here’s the link:

Previous permission for car parking and horse riding at New Waste, gave access to a truly beautiful part of Dartmoor. From the car park you can walk to the beautiful waterfalls of Yealm Steps. You can explore the rich prehistoric and industrial history of this part of Dartmoor by walking along the standing stones imagining the whys and hows they were put there, clamber amongst the multitude of stone circles and enclosures, examine Hillson’s House, and how the landscape was shaped by the tin workings. You can swim in the River Erme, exclaiming with excitement (and the cold!). If you dare you can wade across the river and feel the amazing beauty of the ancient woodland at Piles Copse. Or, just walk along the top of Stall Down Barrow and marvel at the majestic beauty of Stall Moor and the Erme Valley.

We are not alone in loving this part of the moors, each year families, school groups, walking clubs, horse riders, locals and visitors alike come and leave touched by the beauty of this place, and all use the car-parking and access at New Waste.

Ivybridge prides itself on welcoming walkers and tourism is an essential part of the local economy. Without permissive access at New Waste the accessibility of this part of Dartmoor will be severely restricted as there is no safe parking along the road leading to New Waste, and Cornwood is over a mile away along a narrow road.

Please sign this petition so the landowners of Blachford Estate, Alexander and Diana Darwall, understand what an amazing gift they could give people by continuing to allow Permissive Access at New Waste.
I’ve heard there is shortly going to be a meeting between Dartmoor National Park Authority, the Managing Agent, and Mr Darwall, so we haven’t got time to loose to let them all know just how many people care about keeping Dartmoor Accessible. Please share this with everyone you know that love the moors as much as we do.
